This year’s Atlantic Auteurs program meditates on notions of identity through explorations of desire and belonging, place and (re)settlement, and the construction of memory. Operating through an eclectic array of genres, as well as technical and narrative approaches, the lineup is iconoclastic by way of bedazzlement—curious and carefully crafted, as each filmmaker teases the ever-blurring line between fantasy and reality.

Xavier Gould’s MONA is a portrait of both an aspiring model/reality star and her hometown of Moncton, NB, as we share in the creation of an audition tape. Through dynamic cut out animation, Jenny Yuijia Shi’s This Does Not Authorize Re-Entry poetically reflects on the process of navigation through the Canadian immigration system. Jamie Miller’s Proximity contemplates place, desire, and embodiment, as we follow a wife awaiting the return of her husband from sea.

Todd Fraser’s Bha Iad Làn Sgeulachdan reflects on long-form storytelling and archival footage to tease out one's relationship with their own history and memories. Kennlin Barlow’s Above a Grey/Green Sea is a compilation the filmmaker’s once-discarded footage, which together converges on an idea of past identity and functions as a goodbye. Angie & Tracey Richard’s Terre, a stop-motion animation, thoughtfully navigates the contours of imagined, fragmented, and repetitive landscapes, which articulate anxieties provoked by transformations of Acadian landscapes.

Jake Delaney’s Tape End follows a rural family’s journey to the city to discover the results of the father’s medical tests through the shared viewfinder of a loaned camcorder. Induk Lee’s Baduk follows a young mother revisiting an old game and the memories that shaped her relationship with her own mother.

A truly beautiful and impressive showcase of Atlantic identity and talent, we are excited to be programming such an exciting array of filmmaking. —CDF
